Editorial Charter

Med.tv is a pan - Mediterranean Television station based in Malta with the aim to promote the soft power of the region. Soft power is about shaping preference through appeal and attraction. This means promoting the Mediterranean with all the traditions, natural beauty, the cuisine and Mediterranean way of life.

Med.tv can be an official forum for the region that will allow people to visit the Mediterranean virtually and eventually physically. It will promote the good in the region and help foster a sense of pride and community with the citizens of the Mediterranean and bring to the fore initiatives for the improvement of the quality of life. This can happen through cross- Mediterranean initiatives for more sustainable tourism, new business ventures, cleaner energy, community, and anything that celebrates the diverse cultural heritage of the region.

To achieve this, Med.tv will embrace the following editorial narratives and guidelines:

1. Diverse Cultural Narratives: Embrace the “homogenous diversity” of the Mediterranean by showcasing the shared cultural threads that run through stories of individual regions. Highlight how different traditions interweave to create a collective identity, from the coastal towns of Spain to the ancient cities of the Levant.

2. Character-Driven Culinary Journeys: Use the universal language of cuisine as a storytelling vehicle. Follow chefs, home cooks, and food enthusiasts who explore local ingredients, traditional dishes, and modern culinary innovations, weaving in historical and cultural education along the way.

3. Music and Dance as Emotional Storytelling: Profile musicians and dancers, and the emotional and historical significance of their art. Music and dance series can highlight the emotional stories behind classic and contemporary Mediterranean sounds and movements.

4. Sports and Unity: Celebrate sports as a unifier, telling emotional stories of sports teams and athletes that transcend national boundaries and foster a sense of regional camaraderie.

5. Business and Innovation Features: Spotlight entrepreneurs and innovators who are shaping the Mediterranean's future. Focus on positive stories of economic and social impact, sustainability initiatives, and cross-cultural collaborations.

6. Event-Based Storytelling: Cover festivals, holidays, and events that showcase the joyful aspects of Mediterranean life. Use these events as backdrops for stories that educate viewers about the region's culture and history.

7. Inspirational Environmental Stories: Narrate the Mediterranean's natural beauty through stories about conservation efforts, biodiversity, and the lifestyle that thrives around the sea and land, emphasizing the connection between the people and the environment.

8. Multi-Sensory Documentaries: Produce visually stunning and sonically rich documentaries that allow viewers to experience the textures, sounds, and flavours of the Mediterranean, creating a multi-sensory learning experience.

9. Interactive Cultural Explorations: Utilize interactive digital content, like web-based extensions or mobile apps, to delve deeper into cultural topics introduced on TV, providing an immersive educational experience.

10. Series on Shared Histories and Values: Create series that trace the shared histories, values, and stories that connect different Mediterranean cultures,
illustrating how a diverse region can celebrate a unified identity.

11. Travelogue-Style Programs: Engage viewers with travelogues that are less about destinations and more about stories of people, places, and experiences that embody the Mediterranean spirit.

12. Authenticity in Storytelling: Ensure the content reflects the authentic experiences of those living in the Mediterranean, offering a true portrayal of its culture and celebrating its diverse yet unified nature.

13. Non-Religious, Non-Affiliated: Maintain a secular approach in programming to ensure the station is welcoming to all, regardless of religious beliefs or affiliations. Focus on cultural elements that unite rather than divide, such as art, public
celebrations, and communal achievements that transcend religious contexts. Encourage a spirit of shared heritage and common ground, celebrating the rich cultural landscapes that exist beyond the boundaries of religion.

14. Apolitical Content: Steer clear of political discourse, instead dedicating airtime to stories that foster unity and celebrate the collective identity and achievements of the Mediterranean. Highlight initiatives that cross political lines and contribute to the common good, such as environmental conservation, artistic endeavors, and scientific
advancements. Prioritize content that focuses on uplifting narratives and social harmony, providing a sanctuary from political rhetoric.

15. Positive Programming: Embrace the mantra "No News is Good News" by creating a haven from the often overwhelming cycle of traditional news. Focus the station's content on the uplifting, the inspirational, and the beautiful aspects of Mediterranean life. Feature stories that might not make the headlines but enrich the viewer's understanding and appreciation of the region's culture, from everyday acts of kindness to profiles of local heroes making a difference in their communities. This approach fosters a positive viewing environment that can serve as an antidote to negativity, aligning perfectly with the station's mission to showcase the soft power and vibrant spirit of the Mediterranean.

Focusing on these areas can help the television station not only to educate and entertain but also to act as a cultural bridge that promotes understanding and appreciation of the Mediterranean's rich heritage.
